Who needs to file the FAFSA?

Any student considering attending college or other training after high school needs to complete the FAFSA to apply for scholarships, grants, and other financial aid such as work-study funds and loans. Completing and submitting the FAFSA is free and easier than ever. It also gives you access to the largest source of aid to help pay for college or career school.

In addition, many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine eligibility for state and school scholarships and grants. Some private aid providers may use the information to determine whether you qualify for their scholarships.

What will I need to fill out the FAFSA?

To complete the FAFSA, you will need to create a StudentAid.gov account username and password to log in to StudentAid.gov and start the FAFSA form electronically (previously called FSA ID).

To create the StudentAid.gov account the student and their parent (contributor) will need:

• Their Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number (if not a U.S. citizen)

In some instances it is helpful to also have:

• Your 2024 federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned.

• Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)

• Records of child support received in last calendar year.

Dependent students will need: A valid email address for your parent(contributor).

To determine who the parent(contributor) is, please follow this link and answer the questions as honestly as possible.
